As a major business and employer in the North West, Cox Motor Group has a reputation for reaching out and supporting the non-profit clubs and organisations within the local community. As a part of the company, Blackpool Automart lends its name and sponsors a successful local netball team which first started playing matches way back in 1959.
Automart Team Captain, Jo Stubbs, says “I've only been with the team for about nine years now, so I asked some of the members that have been around for longer about the club's history. Our umpire, Irene Rawcliffe, and previous team member Anita Griggs did a bit of reminiscing, and informed me that our team was actually one of the original six teams in the very first year of the league. That was in 1959! Obviously, the team have had quite a few players since then, but certainly some were around in those days.”
“Our team was apparently just called Blackpool Netball Club then, and we've had a number of different names since, with a few team members' husbands providing a bit of sponsorship and support. The current team varies in age from mid-20's to mid-50's, and we have a mum and daughter playing, and the granddaughter is a future recruit! We've had a lot of success recently and plan to continue!”
Jo adds: “We're grateful for the support that Blackpool Automart has given us over the years and for their continuing backing which is vital for the ongoing existence of our long-established club.”
